Winter Wonderland: Enjoy a City Break this Christmas

Monday, January 25th, 2010

The sentiments in Bing Crosby’s classic song ‘White Christmas’ will probably ring true for many UK residents. Indeed, whilst the British weather is often portrayed as being cold and miserable, millions of people dream of a proper, white Christmas every year, but it never quite seems to materialise. Moreover, rain and wind tends to be more likely these days, which doesn’t quite have the same festive effect as a dose of the white stuff. That’s why some look further afield to experience a true winter wonderland. Travel northwards or eastwards of Britain and there’s a myriad of cities to choose from, with the likes of the Czech Republic, Austria and Sweden all virtually guaranteed a spot of snow over the Christmas period. Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and has often been described as the most beautiful city in the whole of Europe, earning itself the nickname ‘The Golden City’. But in winter, there’s always a good chance of it becoming ‘The White City’: the climate will most certainly be below zero at any rate which always increases the chances somewhat. When you’re there, there is an overwhelming feeling no matter what you do or where you go…whether it’s to the cathedral for early-morning Mass, Smetana Hall for some classical music or a snowball fight in the old, cobbled streets, that simply being in Prague is an awe-inspiring experience in itself. If Austria’s on the tourist to-do list, then Christmas is as good a time – if not better – to go as any. Salzburg’s Altstadt is a masterstroke of town-planning, and when it’s plastered in freshly-fallen snow, it’s an awesome sight. Even those who aren’t bothered one way or another about a white Christmas, Salzburg tends to be a little quieter over the festive period, so if you’ve always had a hankering to visit Mozart’s birthplace, winter is a good time to avoid the crowds. Then there’s the Swedish capital, Stockholm. For those looking for a winter city break after the festive period, Stockholm offers a great opportunity to engage in a bit of ice-skating. Given that it’s built on fourteen islands, water surrounds the city and it tends to freeze rock-solid from January onwards. If skating isn’t your thing, fret not. Take a walk on one of the inlets or jump on a short cruise (an ice-breaker, of course) through the city. The heart of Stockholm is simply beautiful, with spectacular palaces and church spires galore helping to create the perfect winter cityscape. Of course, with snow, ice normally isn’t far behind. City break travel insurance can protect you financially from a nasty slip while suitable clothing and footwear will help keep the cold at bay. This will also give you cover should you experience any other kind of mishap when on holiday: it is, after all, better to be safe than sorry. So from Stockholm to Salzburg and beyond, Europe is a winter wonderland for those on the lookout for a spot of snow. Just remember to pack your woollies…and your wellies!

Just wondering if anyone will be going on a Holland American Cruise this 2009 Christmas.

Reasons To Go On Cheap Cruise This Winter

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Do we ask ourselves how often we take time off for a vacation? Can you be boastful about it when answering this question -When was the last time you had a vacation? Or rather went on a cruise? In approximately 45 days from today that I am writing this article we will be celebrating Christmas. For many of us with office jobs the year has been somewhat hectic. The constant talk of economic global recession at the start of this year gave us a reason to work extra hours. If for any reason you don’t seem to understand what I am talking then to make it clear to you am talking about the PP (Private Practice) we involve ourselves in after office hours. Taking time off to enjoy ourselves on vacation can help a great deal in overcoming office stress and our hectic lifestyles. Unfortunately, not many would agree with me-few months ago I wouldn’t agree either. In fact, I believed it was a waste of time and money. But recently I went on a vacation cruise and I bet you would not believe what I find out. After I came back, I now see things on a different angle that cruises not only take off our minds from stress it also give us the opportunity to visit different places around the world. Remember what they say about excursion in high school. Interestingly, many are afraid of going on a cruise partly because of the cost. But I, for one happen to be an average salary earner-maybe that contributed to my not liking to go on a cruise before now. So I went for cheap cruises. And what I discovered was very interesting. As much as many of the cruise lines are expensive there are also some cheap ones.   Some of those I find that are cheap is highlighted below.

Get Some Winter Sun in Australia This Christmas

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Most Brits associate Christmas with cold weather, little sunlight, snow, families cosying up indoors and traditional Christmas cuisine such as turkey and mulled wine. But if that all sounds as appealing as that knitted reindeer jumper re-gifted through the family since time memoriam, Australia can provide an alternative Christmas holiday with things to see and experience to suit anyone’s tastes – whether you’re looking to experience the cities, beaches or the many natural sights.

The most popular city among tourists visiting Australia is Sydney, and it’s not hard to see why. As one of the most iconic cities in Australia it’s most well-known attractions include the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Royal Botanical Gardens, Luna Park, Sydney Tower and its many beaches. Bondi Beach in particular has proven to be popular with British and Irish tourists looking to spend the holiday in the sun and the beach has many cafes, restaurants and hotels, giving spectacular views of the beach. Other major cities in Australia offering a similar experience include Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

No trip to Australia would be complete without visiting the Great Barrier Reef. It is the largest coral reef system and the biggest single structure made by living organisms in the world. It composed of roughly 3,000 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for 1615 miles over an area of approximately 132,974 sq mi. Due to its vast biodiversity, warm clear waters and its accessibility from the floating guest facilities, the reef is a very popular destination for tourists, especially scuba divers. The reef is accessible via boat tours and cruises, from single day trips to longer voyages. Glass-bottomed boats and underwater observatories are also popular, as are helicopter flights.

Ayers Rock (or Uluru) is one of Australia’s most recognisable natural icons. The sandstone formation stands 1142ft high, with a circumference of 5. 8 mi. It has great cultural significance for the A?angu landowners, who lead walking tours of the area, informing visitors of the local bush foods, flora and fauna and Aboriginal dreamtime stories. The sandstone formation is notable for appearing to change colour throughout the day and year depending on the light and weather, glowing red at sunset and silver-grey when it rains.

In addition to the mainland there are several islands to check out, including Tasmania. Promoting itself as the Natural State and the Island of Inspiration, almost 37% of Tasmania is in reserves, National Parks and World Heritage Sites. Despite its small size, there are plenty of sights to see, and Tasmania attracts many tourists for its trout fishing possibilities and the iconic Overland Track bush walk.

So if you’re looking to skip the cold climes of the UK and spend Christmas in the sun, a festive holiday in Australia is an ideal destination.

This Year (2008) Christmas Movies

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Here it is again. That time of the year when, according to the church, we should celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. – According to Bart Simpson, the birth of Santa Claus. – Some of the holiday traditions are sending cards to people you don’t really know and/or only care about for personal gain, decorate the house, the Christmas tree and put up Christmas light – Even tough it might be tiresome and time consuming and will have to removed after a couple of weeks followed by equally beautiful and bright bills -, sing Christmas carols – watch out for cracks on windows, – the last trip to church for the year (First: New Year, Second: Easter), stuff yourself with turkey and other Christmas treats and the most important part, remember that giving is more important than receiving. – Yeah right!

Anyway, there are some great Christmas movies in the theaters.

Four Christmases, Staring: Vince Vaughn, Reese Witherspon, Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, Jon Voight and Jon Favreau. Synopsis: A couple struggle to visit all four of their divorced parents on Christmas Day. – That’s what happens when you lie then caught.

Nothing Like The Holidays, Staring: Alfred Molina, Elizabeth Peña, Freddy Rodríguez, Luis Guzmán, Jay Hernandez, John Leguizamo, Debra Messing, Vanessa Ferlito, Melonie Diaz. Synopsis: A Puerto Rican family living in the area of Humboldt Park in west Chicago faces what may be their last Christmas together. – Don’t let the title fool you.

A Christmas Tale, Staring: Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Paul Roussilon, Anne Consigny, Mathieu Amalric, Melvil Poupaud, Hippolyte Giradot and Emmanuelle Devos. Synopsis: The Vuillard’s shared history of physical and mental illness, estrangement, self harm, and loss doesn’t lead itself to the idea of a cheerful holiday season. But can a Christmastime reunion, a scheme concocted by three of the youngest family members, finally bring peace their clan – The actors might not be familiar because the movie is French. (“Un Conte de Noël”).

Movie which will be release in theater on Christmas are:

Marley and Me, Staring: Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. Synopsis: A family learns important life lessons from their adorable, but naughty and neurotic dog. – Did you see Jen on the cover of GQ Magazine?

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Starring: Brad Pitt and Kate Blanchet. Synopsis: Tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences. – Curious indeed.

Bedtime Stories, Staring: Adam Sandler and Courtney Cox. Synopsis: A family comedy about a hotel handyman whose life changes when the lavish bedtime stories he tells his niece and nephew start to magically come true. – Now this seems like an ideal Christmas movie.

Movies which don’t fit in the Christmas genre are: Valkyrie staring Tom Cruise – Who hasn’t been abducted by aliens. Yet. – is the true story about a plot to assassinate Hitler, Revolutionary Road staring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet – Yep, their first movie together since Titanic – is about young couple living in a Connecticut suburb during the mid-1950s struggle to come to terms with their personal problems while trying to raise their two children and Frost/Nixon staring Frank Langella, Michael Sheen, Sam Rockwell and Kevin Bacon is a dramatic retelling of the post-Watergate television interviews between British talk-show host David Frost and former president Richard Nixon. – We can handle the truth. Can’t we?

To everyone I wish you 2008 Merry Christmases. And Remember don’t drink (alcohol) then drive – drinking and driving is also illegal and dangerous by the way – eat responsibly – you don’t want it to be your last Christmas by sending you cholesterol level to the roof – be careful with lights, candles and fireworks unless you want to be homeless, get a trip to the hospital or host a funeral the next day.

What No Socks? Something a Little Unusual This Christmas… (christmas Gifts)

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Are you tired of trawling around the sock rack on Christmas Eve trying to find last minute Christmas gifts? “Should I go for days of the week or something funny?” you ask yourself while trying to remember what it is you bought last year. As the clock counts down, the rest of the family (already having bought their Christmas gifts) are back home getting ready to sit down to dinner. So you panic and grab anything. You return home only to realise as you’re wrapping the Christmas gifts that the socks are either the wrong size or the same as last year or just generally not very interesting – even worse, they seem to be playing a jolly Christmas tune. You promise yourself that this is the last year you’ll be buying pairs of socks for Christmas gifts. However, you know full well that next year you’ll just do the same thing all over again! If it’s not socks it will be some equally boring present, as shopping for Christmas Gifts becomes increasingly hard and frustrating. Christmas is supposed to be a relaxed time of year where you can enjoy time off work with the family. Be it by the fire listening to carols or just in front of the television catching up on the Christmas specials and cheesy films. However, Christmas has inevitably become more and more commercial over recent years. The stress of hunting down the latest gadgets for Christmas gifts for your loved ones, only to discover they sold out two days ago, has made shopping for Christmas gifts an exhaustive process. Of course once you find them, you then have to think about the other Christmas gifts; the stocking fillers. Something small and cheap that’s not a complete waste of money…. it’s a hard one. Back in the time of our grandparents it was traditional to find an orange in your stocking on Christmas morning. The World Wars and rationing made certain foods and fruits exotic and rare Christmas gifts. Now we give socks, an everyday commodity. The originality and excitement of stocking fillers has been lost somewhere along the way. It’s no surprise given that mass production, superstores and the Internet mean that everything you want is only the push of a button away. It is increasingly hard to predict what your loved ones are going to want as Christmas gifts, after all how do you shop for someone who can easily get anything they want on-line? So inevitably we end up back with the socks, pyjamas and other every day commodities. They may make boring Christmas gifts, but at least they’re needed, they will get used. And then of course there are the people receiving the Christmas gifts. There are only so many times you can un-wrap a pair of socks and feign excitement. Either they’re too tight or they are too embarrassing to wear to the office. Without a doubt at some point during the year you are going to be running late and will mismatch your days of the week, inevitably leading to some office joke. Or perhaps they’re just that little bit too bright. But it’s Christmas so you smile, say thank you and make a mental note to store them at the back of your drawer. After all someone went to the trouble of going out and buying them. You just hope that maybe next year they’ll have that bit more imagination with their Christmas Gifts. As the shopper, having exhausted your bank account on that one big present, you want something small and cheap to make the stocking look that little bit fatter. So what’s the answer you ask yourself? Well first forget the oranges and socks. Why not try searching on-line and beat the Christmas rush to try and find Christmas gifts that are a touch more original. The credit crunch may have hit, but there are still plenty of affordable Christmas gifts available on the Internet. Most websites stock Gifts all year round and have plenty of hints and sections to help you find the perfect Gifts For Him or Her, For Kids, as well as a wide variety of Stocking Fillers. For example if your loved one is a culinary whiz, instead of buying them more cookery books, you could try giving them a Hot Stuff Chilli Pocket Garden which will allow them to grow their own spices. Or for the more creative relatives you could always try something like Create your own Christmas Cards. While Internet shopping may seem impersonal there are plenty of sites that will let you personalise your Christmas gifts with little messages. There are plenty of alternatives, so just get searching! You should be able to find original Christmas gifts that will hopefully both please and surprise and all from the comfort of your own living room. Forget annoying salesmen, panicked shoppers and huge queues. Everything is just a mouse click away, you can’t ask for much more!

A Know This Is Early But Ive Got A Christmas Dinner Question?

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

My brother and I are both intermediate cooks in the kitchen and with a little forethought, time and ingenuinety we can make just about anything. We have made dinner today 2 years already and we’re going on our 3rd year. Each year we’ve out done ourselves, but this year Im stumped. It has been suggested that we do a “Christmas cruise theme”, with each course a different European country, but quite honestly Im struggling to work out even a basic menu to work off for this undertaking. Please some suggestions of different foods from different European countries would be so helpful. . .
